Choosing the Ideal Blinds for Your Home

If you’ve just moved into a new home, or you’re redecorating the one you’re already in, then a great way to transform your living space is to change your window treatments. You could ditch the boring old curtains and install blinds instead, for example.

You might be worried that using blinds will make the place seem less like a home and more like an office, but this couldn’t be further from the truth, especially if you know what you’re doing. Read on to find out how to dress each type of window to get the look you want and then visit to make it happen.

First, you need to measure up

Well, actually, you need to decide which sort of fitting you want before you measure anything. Do you want your blinds to rest inside the window recess or outside it? Blinds inside the recess is ideal for smaller rooms as you don’t “lose” so much wall space when the blinds are down. If your rooms are larger, then outside the recess is better because this blocks out more light and adds more interest.

Now you can measure up…

If your blinds are going inside the recess, then measure the width at its narrowest part, as well as the height.

If you’re going for outside the recess, then measure the width and add 4cm on each side, as well as the height and add 15cm to the bottom.

Then you need to decide which side of the window the pulley should go on – aim for maximum ease and minimum tangle opportunities.

Then you can choose your style

Roman blinds

Roller blinds are the most common option. They roll up and down with the help of a cord and if you want to make them stand out from the crowd a bit more, you can have a different print or fabric on either side. They’re easy to afford and look great in an informal environment like a home office – not too cosy, but not too sterile either.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds give quite a formal but luxurious look. Made from fabric, they’re opened and closed by a pulley. When you raise them, the fabric concertinas into large pleats, which displays a lot of the fabric, so choose it wisely. Some people can make their own Roman blinds, but many choose to have them custom-made, so it’s a good job there’s lots of fabrics and linings to choose from.

Venetian blinds

These blinds are made from slats of natural materials like natural materials like bamboo, wood, or man-made materials like metal or plastic, threaded onto support cords. They’re often used in kitchens and bathrooms, where metal and plastic fittings are more suited to the damp conditions. Venetian blinds are also good in offices because you can control and filter the light very easily for privacy.

Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds work best in floor-to-ceiling windows and are often used in conservatories and summer houses. They’re ideal in the summer because they can block out the heat as well as the light. They are hung on a track and gather to the side when you open them.
